MINI
MONETS
Mini Monets was the first summer art camp of the 2009
season!  This camp gave students the opportunity to
try different mediums and learn a touch of art history
along the way.  The theme of this year's Mini Monets
was ANIMALS!  Please enjoy the results.
Students took a look at Grant Wood's rural landscape paintings.
The rolling fields, trees and crops were pointed out.  They created
a rural landscape of their own using Prismacolor pencils.  Next,
students sculpted a farm animal for the foreground.

I always encourage students to use their imaginations and this age
group really does do that!  Can you spot the alligator with the
orange snowman riding on its back?
PIG-CASSO!

This lesson invited students to draw their favorite animals using
simple geometric shapes.  The animal was then divided into
planes, along with the background.  Next we traced our lines
with oil pastels.  We discussed color temperature and using
watercolors, students painted their animals and their
backgrounds in opposite temperatures.
After examining
the folk art of the
Oaxacan Valley of Mexico,
the young campers constructed
animals using wooden pieces.
These are fantasy animals.  Note
that the sculptures are recog-
nizable as animals simply
by the inclusion of certain
animal characteristics such
as two eyes, a snout,
ears and horns.
Mexican Folk Art Animals
To round out the week, campers drew an animal, fantasy or real, that they
would like to ride.  If you look closely you can find a student riding on the
backs of the animals!  Please click on the image for a larger view.
We all had a great time at Mini Monets Summer Art Camp!
